Getting a Tax Notice

There is nothing like going to the mailbox and opening the mailbox only to find a notice from the IRS or a State taxing agency.  Sweat and nervous begins to sit in a you ponder opening the envelope.  There are many reasons you can get a tax notice.  Most tax notices require a response.

The tax notice are usually specific about  your tax return or account and will have instructions on what you need to do or send to satisfy  the notice.  Sometimes the tax notice will be a show a correction to the return that has been made by the IRS or State tax department.  If you receive a tax notice correction,verify the information on the correction  notice matches the information reported on your tax return.  If the correction notice agrees to the tax return, then you will not need to respond to the IRS or Stat taxing authority.

If the notice does not match the return, then you will need to prepare a response to the IRS or State taxing authority as to why their notice or assessment is not correct.  Whether the notice agrees or not to the tax return, keep the tax notice with the tax the return in which it responds to.

There are several reasons to get an IRS or a State tax notice, the main thing to remember is don’t sweat or ignore the tax notice. You just need to determine why you received the notice.
